Filipina Familiarity 101 -  Life In The New Land Part 2

In the first segment we learnt how Steve and Elsie started to develop
marital problems because of their conflicting work schedules and her
desire to help her family.  Read on for some proven solutions to this
too common occurrence in Fil-Am marriages.

What was happening to Steve and Elvie was not an isolated case. Many
Filipina's don't realise that the big spending rich Kano they get used
to when in the Philippines on vacation, turns into a penny pinching
working class stiff as soon as they get to the States. Reality hits
for both parties and on top of the usual difficulties any couple would
have assimilating in a cross cultural marriage, things can go bad
very quickly.

The first mistake they made was probably not making sure their work
schedules gave them enough time together.  Steve should have played
his role as the Patron Familia, or head of the family, and insisted
his wife find a job more in sync with his work schedule. Elvie would
have accepted that and kept looking.  So long as he supported her
desire to have her own income and helped her find something more
suitable, there would have been no problem.

Wanting their own income or some little business is the wish of just
about every Filipina who migrates overseas. Even those I know who have
married well, financially speaking, want to be able to show their
husband they can contribute to the family fortune as well.  And they
want some independence.  They are a long way from all they have known
all of their lives and family support is a major corner stone of their
psyche.  Being able to send money home to help the family increases
their "Hiya", or face, enormously.

The second thing that should have happened was to put a stop, or at
least a limit, on the demands being made. Some families, once they
realise they have a foreigner in the family, think it is an excuse
not to work.  They don't realise that just because the new family
member threw cash around like it was confetti when he was on holiday
that he can't do that forever more. Firstly, he had probably saved
and budgeted to spend a fair amount on the trip. With the exchange
rate and cost of living being what it is, it made it appear like he
was rich. In Filipino terms he is. But once back in his real world,
a buck becomes a buck again and he might not be making that many of
them. This is why so many men move here, especially when on a fixed
or retirement income. Their dollar goes further and they can live so
much better than on the same amount back home.

The Ten Commandments of Marriage

Commandment 1.Marriages are made in heaven. But, so again, are
thunder and lightning.

Commandment 2. If you want your wife to listen and pay strict
attention to every word you say, talk in your sleep.

Commandment 3. Marriage is grand -- and divorce is at least 100 grand!

Commandment 4. Married life is very frustrating. In the first year
of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. In the second
year, the woman speaks and the man listens. In the third year, they
both speak and the neighbors listen.

Commandment 5. When a man opens the door of his car for his wife,
you can be sure of one thing: Either the car is new or the wife is.

Commandment 6. Marriage is when a man and woman become as one. The
trouble starts when they try to decide which one.

Commandment 7. Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night
thinking about something you say. After marriage, he will fall asleep
before you finish.

Commandment 8. Every man wants a wife who is beautiful,
understanding, economical, and a good cook. But the law allows only
one wife.

Commandment 9. Marriage and love are purely a matter of
chemistry. That is why a wife treats her husband like toxic waste.

Commandment 10. A man is incomplete until he is married. After that,
he is finished
